Guess What? More than just T-Shirts
I get so many questions about this! Of course the quilt looks perfect and gorgeous with just t-shirts, but I know that many sports programs, extra-curricular activities, and life give us all types of memories in all types of materials!
Of course you have the obvious, the all cotton t-shirts, the poly-blend t-shirts, and YES, even DriFit t-shirts! All of these are usable and can mix and match. Just be aware it will not affect the final product, but the 'feel' of the top will differ based on the material.
Usually, the next question I get is can I incorporate a jersey or tank top, or even part of a uniform (cheer, etc). YES! Now, I do charge an extra fee per item as these take a little more work to prepare them so they will play nice with all the other pieces of the quilt. Sometimes V-neck shirts will require a little extra prep, so those are case by case on an extra fee but most certainly can be used.
Sometimes I have clients that have a vertical school name down the leg of sweatpants or on the sleeve of a long-sleeve shirt. YES! These will be able to go in and actually provide a great vertical block for collage quilts. I actually LOVE when the graphics are a little different than the usual block in the center of the shirt.
I can use the front and the back of a shirt (or you can designate one or the other). For my calculations, I count the front and one and the back as one, therefore, if you want both front and back that would be 2 shirts.
I have used shirts with patches on them, baseball jerseys with buttons (I remove the buttons and sew them on after it is quilted!), and logos from polo or dress shirts. This is YOUR quilted treasure!
I have used sections off of tote bags, fabric from favorite dresses, even baby blankets! I love that each and every creation is unique and truly one of a kind.
Here Is A Short List of the CANNOTS!
There have not been many things that I have come across that cannot be used. But there are some exceptions. Please do not use anything that is:
So precious to you that if it was cut up you would not be happy. Every t-shirt, etc. that I receive from you will be trimmed and prepped to go into a quilt and will never be the same again. If you want it to remain intact, please leave it out!
Already very worn, extremely thin, and has several holes. A small hole or rip can be worked around, but if it is too damaged, it will not withstand the quilting process and will lower the integrity of the quilt to stay together after use and washing.
If you are unsure, always ask! I try to be very honest and upfront with my clients during the intake meeting and as I progress with completing the quilt. I take each piece into account before I cut it, to make sure I have a plan and a process to turn it into a cozy and treasured keepsake that you will love forever!
I hope this helps! Let me know when you are ready to start with your t-shirt quilt!
