What Is A Block T-Shirt Quilt?

I make two types of t-shirt quilts. See my previous blog post for the information on a collage style. This post will be about the block style quilt.
A block style quilt will have uniform blocks, usually 14", 15" or 16". This is great for making a certain size of quilt, if you like cleaner lines, and also if you have many shirts that have the same or similar size graphic on it. If you have an assortment of T-shirts for your graduate from prek all the way through high school, then this is not the right style for you. You will want a collage quilt.
The block style can be a great way to make a decent size of quilt with fewer shirts. 12 shirts will give you a decent throw size in a 3x4 block. The minimal for a collage style would be 20-29!

For my quilts, I use a complimentary color for the sashing (border) around the blocks and as a border around the entire quilt before quilting and binding. This gives it a completed look.
The most important part of planning for this type of quilt is how many shirts to make it work...think 3x3, 3x4, 4x5, etc. You will be amazed at how block quilts with t-shirts that range in color and pattern come together!
Let me know how I can help you take those old t-shirts and turn it into a usable memory keepsake!
